24 Hour Prize Giveaway delayed :-(
posted by bigyellow on 2009-09-14 22:24:44
The giveaway that was scheduled for Friday, September 18th has been delayed because we simply haven't attracted enough users yet. The goal of all of this was to grow the chess community here at nothingbutchess.com. Membership levels are increasing, but slowly. There are other ideas in the pipe to attract more users, but at this time it doesn't make sense to hold the giveaway.
Do not dispair, however. We will have the giveaway! We're just working to attract my users. Hopefully we can hold it by the end of the year. For those who did indeed play a game for the original contest, you'll automatically be registered when it does take place.
Oh, and you can definitely help the site grow. If you're logged in and click on the profile link, you'll notice a "tell a friend" link at the top right. Heck, just click the link I provided in this post, go to the page and enter the email address of each friend you know who plays chess. The more people that sign up, the more your "friend's activity" value goes up. What does that value mean? At the moment, nothing! 23_skidoo and I will figure out rewards to give out based on this number.
Thanks for continuing to make nothingbutchess.com a great chess experience.

Well, that's a disappointment. I was looking forward to the giveaway. Have you thought about where you can advertise the site? It's difficult for me to get more people to this site for two reasons: 1, I don't know anyone else who likes to play chess outside of my family; and 2, I hate the banner ads of the women showing cleavage. I am a Christian man and so are most of my friends. It would be a tough sell, even if they liked to play chess. Too much of an offense, not just to them, but to their families. I'm just sayin'...

Funnily enough that also is one of the downsides for me (the adverts). I play on another site where I also have my kids playing on but would not allow them on this one.
